Cambodia Gambling Halls

[ English ]

There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort.
